NSF Artists and Writers Grant
Welcome to our site! Anthony Powell, a New Zealand native, is a recipient of the 2007 National Science Foundation's Artists and Writers Grant. They are sending us to Antarctica so Anthony can take more of his wonderful time-lapse photographs. This blog is to document our journey and let you in on what life is like on the the big white continent.
Anthony and I, Christine, have both spent the last ten years working in Antarctica, at McMurdo Station and New Zealand's Scott Base. But this is our first opportunity to visit the frozen continent for purely artistic purposes.
Part of our time will be spend in and around McMurdo Station and other times out at remote field camps including Lake Vanda in the Dry Valleys and Cape Bird. Stay tuned. Our journey to "The Ice" begins around November 15th, 2007. In the next few weeks, we will be traveling from New Zealand to the United States in preparations for the trip.
Visit YouTube to view Anthony's 6-minute Year On Ice. Also check out his photography website www.antarcticimages.com
Here, Anthony combines his technical expertise with a bit of "Kiwi ingenuity" to create special timers and equipment for his cameras.

Here is another sight we seem to see a lot...

Hi,
What a fantastic website! I have searched for photos and videos of the Antarctica animals for posting to a "MyFamily.com" site for following the voyage of the Gianella to resupply fuel oil down there this season. I hope it is OK to post your link. The children will love your work. It is a GREAT documentation.
